Why is the MOT Test Conducted? Importance of Testing Procedures?

The UK Government, understanding the importance of road safety, has introduced the MOT test which is mandatory for all vehicles. It is an annual inspection that decides what is the health condition of the vehicle and if it is not good then it should be repaired by any reliable automobile.

Defective parts in the vehicle not only pollute the environment but also play with your safety. The work of checking vehicles at such stations is entrusted to skilled and experienced examiners who have good knowledge of automobile technical data. The certificate received after passing this test is a way through which the vehicle is allowed to drive on the road.

Which Vehicles Are Required to Take Part in MOT Test?

As per the latest rules made by the Transport Ministry, an MOT test is mandatory for vehicles purchased more than 3 years ago. Below we have mentioned some such vehicles for which the timeline has been kept for 1 year.

  • Ambulance
  • Taxies
  • Private Passenger Vehicle

Since the new vehicles are less likely to malfunction, therefore this interval has been set in such a way as to ensure that the vehicle can comfortably comply with all environmental and road safety standards even when the vehicle parts are old.

What is the Frequency of MOT Test?

Every driver is required to get his vehicle tested once a year. The MOT test certificate is valid for one year only. Any component of the vehicle may fail during the validity of the certificate, but this will not affect the status of your certificate. However, if there is any defect in the vehicle, there should be no delay in repairing it immediately, which is very important from a safety point of view.

What Parts are Inspected During MOT Test

The MOT test is a broad process in which various components of the vehicle are checked to find out how they are functioning. Passing this comprehensive test ensures that all the parts of the vehicle that we have mentioned are in good condition and can be repaired efficiently.

  • Fuel System
  • Seatbelts
  • Exhaust System
  • Exhaust Emissions
  • Horn
  • Doors
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Windscreen
  • Electrical Components
  • Registration Plates
  • Wipers
  • Load Security
  • Lights
  • Bonnet
  • Windscreen
  • Seats
  • Mirrors
  • Vehicle Identification Number
  • Tyres and Wheels
  • Brakes
  • Vehicle’ body

The purpose of implementing this test is to allow vehicles on the road that are not harmful to the environment and are not breaking road safety standards.

All Type of Categories Based on Various Inadequacies with Car’s Components

If a fault or inadequacy is found in a vehicle during an MOT test, it will be placed in one of the following categories. If the defect is included in the dangerous or major category, the result of the MOT test will be declared a failure.

A vehicle with such a fault is dangerous not only for the car owner but also for other drivers travelling with you. Minor inadequacies do not hurt the MOT result as they are not life-threatening so the examiner will advise you on what steps should be taken to fix them. The MOT can be passed with minor inadequacies.

The DVSA thinks that by changing the way inadequacies are classified, drivers will be better able to determine which parts of their vehicle require attention.

What are the Required Checks With Vehicle Exhaust Emissions?

While checking for Exhaust emissions latest restrictions are being executed. For vehicles run on diesel, there are lower level limits

Some Vehicles Are Free from the MOT Test

Here, we are talking about classic vehicles. If a vehicle has completed 40 years after its registration and has not been extensively modified over the years, it is not required to undergo an MOT test.

Let us tell you that 'substantial modification' means when the technical characteristics of the important components of classic vehicles are replaced with modern ones. So in the end I would like to say that such a historic vehicle is completely roadworthy.

What Impact Does a MOT Failure Status Have On Other Services?

MOT pass certificate of a vehicle is a legal document which not only grants permission to drive the vehicle but also allows many other services without any restrictions. Here we are talking about vehicle tax and insurance, which get affected or may become inoperative if the vehicle owner does not have a valid MOT certificate.

What Does An MOT Test Cost?

This answer cannot be given directly as MOT testing fees are set differently for different types of vehicles. For example, the DVSA sets the maximum charge for a car at £54.85. The fee for normal motorcycles is £29.65, and for motorcycles with a sidecar, the fee is £37.80. Keep in mind that this cost does not include any repair charges if your vehicle somehow fails to pass the MOT test.

If the test results reveal any fault related to a car component, you can get it repaired at the same MOT centre or if it's your wish, you can also send your vehicle to another garage that has great command of Automobile technical data.
